When it comes to web design google recommends that all websites should be responsive. This is one of the most important factors of web design in 2018 due to over 52% of all website traffic coming from mobile phones. Smart phones have changed the way we use the internet with access to the web from anywhere. Before responsive designs were common practice, users would have to zoom in to read content giving a poor user experience. Google wants to rank websites higher that have the best user experience as it offers the best results higher up in the search engine results. For this reason if your website is not mobile responsive, you can wave goodbye to your traffic.
What Does Responsive Design Mean?
Responsive websites adjust to work seamlessly on any screen size. Whether your on a PC, Laptop, Tablet or Mobile, your content should fit the page and be clear to read. Responsive websites work by using a mix of HTML & CSS. With CSS its possible to make text, images & components fit within the screen size with flexible grids. You can tell if a website is responsive by visiting on your mobile, if you can scroll across and items don’t fit perfectly on the screen then it needs responsive design work.
Flexible Web Content & Media
The principle is straight forward when it comes to responsive web design. Using CSS we can scale images & text to fit to a certain screen width. For example, on screens less than 797px wide we can set an image to a width of 100% using the CSS max-width: 100%. This will ensure that any screen that is less than 797px wide will display the image to fill the screen.
The CSS example of this would be:
@media (max-width: 797px)
Of course, you can use different screen widths to suit different devices making your website work seamlessly on tablets, phones etc. Text can be changed to different font sizes etc using this same technique making everything sit perfectly on all devices.
Responsive web design can be confusing and very time consuming when your not familiar with HTML & CSS. It’s a must when it comes to ranking well in google & improving your customers user experience. Visiting a website that’s not responsive is a big put off and will cause your bounce rate to increase with mobile users.
